Slipcovers for piano and sewing chairs

Cover those ugly chairs!

March, 2004

2 chairs--one for sewing and one for piano-playing. Same style, $9.99 office chairs from Office Depot.  Fabric bought at Beverly Crafts.

I started with McCalls 8036 and altered it to fit the chairs, with light gathering at the corners. Made my own piping—a first!  I glued a 3” thick foam cushion on each chair before I covered it to make it more comfortable to sit on.  I trimmed the square cushion to (sort of) fit with a serrated kitchen knife. The green piping on the piano chair matches the fabric used to upholster a hope chest seat in the living room. The Sonoma fruit pattern piping on the sewing chair matches my kitchen curtains and dining chair pads.   The chair skirts are shorter than floor length because I didn’t want the skirt to get entangled in the chair wheels.  I didn’t try to match plaids, either, or take any back tucks, pleats, etc. as shown on the pattern. I just wanted those ugly chairs covered!

During--sad to say, the fabric lay like this for months before I finally got around to making the slipcovers!

After—this is the sewing chair; piano chair looks the same except for piping color
